The go to and probably the best essential oil for anxiety is lavender oil. There are other essential oils that help relieve symptoms of anxiety, and I’ll get to them later. Right now I’m going to talk about lavender essential oil.

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is a purple flowering plant of the mint family with a lovely fragrant scent. It is one of the most popular and versatile essential oils. It has been used as a remedy to improve sleep and rest for centuries. Lavender essential oil has origins in the Mediterranean. It was used by the Egyptians to mummify bodies and for bathing in Persia, Greece, and Rome.
Lavender is used for anxiety, insomnia, pain and depression today. It is also used for its anti-inflammatory, muscle- relaxing, detoxifying and sedative properties. The anti-anxiety effects of lavender is linked to its component linalool, a fragrance associated with a reduction of stress responses.
According to a 2018 review, in the World Journal of Biological Psychology, in clinical trials, lavender essential oil had beneficial effects comparable to those achieved under lorazepam in patients with generalized anxiety disorder. It improved sleep, depression and quality of life.
In a double-blind, randomized study of lavender oil mentioned in Phytomedicin in 2010, lavender oil effectively improved generalized anxiety compared to Lorazepam for this disorder. During the study, there was not only a decrease in the mental effects of anxiety, but also in the physical symptoms.
Ultimately, of course, how someone reacts to lavender essential oil or any aromatherapy is very individualized. What makes it effective is how our brains and nervous system respond to it. It’s true that what works for one person may not work for another.
