Essential Oils for Seasonal Allergies: The 5 Best Oils
Allergy symptoms are caused by an overactive immune response in your body, causing sneezing, a stuffy/runny nose, itchy/watery eyes, hives, rashes and fatigue. Essential oils won’t cure your allergies, but they can help relieve some symptoms associated with your allergies. Essential oils can relieve inflammation and make it easier to breathe, and the antimicrobial properties of essential oils can remove the source of the allergen by killing the allergy-causing pathogens.
The following is a list of 5 essential oils for seasonal allergies:
1. Peppermint Oil
Peppermint oil feels good when you have blocked sinuses because of it’s cooling effect. Peppermint oil contains menthol. The menthol affects the mucus receptors in the nose, which helps to open the airways and clear mucus. Peppermint oil has anti-inflammatory effects. It also fights bacteria, which is a trigger of congestion. Peppermint oil calms the contraction-like spasms that cause the uncontrollable coughing that can be associated with allergies.
Some ways to use the peppermint oil is to put a couple drops in a diffuser. Put a couple drops in a bowl of warm water and breathe it in. Use 3 to 4 drops in a steam bath. You can use it with a carrier oil, like coconut or jojoba, and apply to the chest, back of neck and temples. One to two drops of peppermint oil in water internally to relieve food allergy symptoms, detoxify body, and eliminate the allergens through sweat or urination.
2. Eucalyptus Oil
Eucalyptus oil contains a compound called cineole, which is effective in treating sinusitis issues like headaches, nasal obstruction and runny nose. It opens up the lungs and sinuses, improving circulation. Eucalyptus oil promotes deeper breathing. Eucalyptus oil also provides antibacterial, anti-fungal and anti-infection properties.
You would use Eucalyptus oil in the same way as with the peppermint oil. Put a couple drops in a diffuser. Put 2 or 3 drops in a bowl of warm water and breathe it in with a towel over your head. Use it in a steam bath, 3 or 4 drops. Also make a chest rub by combining it with your favorite carrier oil and rubbing it on.
3. Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil fights bacteria and viruses. It contains a compound called alpha-sabine that provides antiviral, antibacterial and anti-fungal effects. It may also reduce inflammation and sinus swelling. Tea tree oil is also proven to kill mold, bacteria and fungi, which are all known allergens. When diffused, tea tree oil can destroy airborne pathogens that cause allergies. Tea tree oil is also an antiseptic and can be used as a cleaner.
Ways to use tea tree oil is a couple drops in a diffuser. Dilute 3 or 4 drops with a carrier oil, and with a cotton ball apply it to the skin for rashes or hives. Also rub into the liver area to help flush out toxins. You can also use it as a cleaner.
4. Lavender Oil
Lavender oil calms and soothes allergy symptoms. It calms and reduces inflammation, prevents allergic inflammation and the enlargement of mucous cells. Lavender oil is a natural antihistamine. It can strengthen your body against allergens and symptoms of allergies. Lavender oil also helps soothe the skin from rashes and hives caused by skin allergies.
Ways to use lavender oil is a few drops in a diffuser. Dilute in a carrier oil like coconut or jojoba and apply to the skin to treat rashes and hives. Use a few drops in a bath.
5. Lemon Oil
Lemon oil clears sinuses and inhibits bacterial activity. Lemon oil supports lymphatic system drainage and helps overcome respiratory conditions. It also boosts the immune system. Lemon oil in water improves immune function and detoxifies the body, stimulates the liver and flushes out toxins that can cause inflammation and an overactive immune system. Lemon oil stimulates white blood cell production which helps to protect the body. It can also be used to disinfect your home. When diffused, lemon oil can kill bacteria and eliminate allergy triggers in the air.
Use 1 or 2 drops of lemon oil in water to take internally. Add a few drops to your laundry detergent or a couple drops to water in a spray bottle and spray sheets, couches, drapes and carpets.
